Turandot is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, set to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. The opera is based on a collection of Persian stories called The Book of One Thousand and One Days or Hezar o-yek shab. At the time of Puccini's death, the opera was unfinished; it was later completed by Franco Alfano. Turandot’s first performance was held at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1926.Turandot tells the story of the Ice Princess and her hot-blooded Prince, who sets out to win her heart. It is a fairytale of disguised identities, riddles, ritual executions and powerful, triumphant love. Its music ranges from the exotic and portentous through the grandeur and mysticism of Turandot’s riddles, to the tragic beauty of the servant girl Liù’s appeals to and final sacrifice for her beloved master, Prince Calaf. It also contains the great and much-loved tenor aria “Nessun Dorma”, which was immortalised beyond the world of opera by Luciano Pavarotti, when he sung it in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.
